May. 10th, 2008 @ 12:54 pm Missing my bf, but...
My boyfriend is at a conference in chicago this weekend, and I was bored last night when I realized something.

I used to go out by myself, I can do it now!

So, I went to plush and saw a few decent bands. It was a cheap show, but pretty fun. (So were the drinks.) But I realized that I really don't have many friends left that I could call up and say, "let's go out!"

Most of them have their own partners (boyfriends and girlfriends) or have moved out of the city. It's more that I haven't replaced the hang-out friends I have. Those who are still here aren't the type to go out mostly, either due to money or temperament.

Most of my acquantances, now, are my boyfriends' friends, and none are the type that I'd really call up myself and look to go out with. (Well, one might end up that way!) I'm wondering if this is just a function of being a couple (and him being the one who has more social opportunities), if this is a function of me not being a social type in general (I keep my friends for quite a while, really.) - or is it me just not asserting my individuality and leaning on my boyfriend as a social crutch?

Because it's so easy to sound snarky, or insincere, or such. So, all of mine ended up short. I think I have trouble randomly complimenting unless it's within context of something.

Feb. 22nd, 2008 @ 11:21 am A response to "barstool economics"
Wise Bread reposted Barstool Economics, a short quip about tax cuts. I don't really have the motivation to give this the thorough rebuttal, but this was just a thought I had on it.

The wealthy man (or class) is also receiving more services with the money he pays. They're getting government assurances on their investments - cue what the American government did for investors in Argentina, or the Middle East... or the subprime scandal. The poor person loses his or her home, but the government talks about bailing out the banking industry. (Which reminds me of the savings and loan bailout in many ways.)

I think the more appropriate analogy is the software package. A software developer charges wealthier people more for the same software package, but they get personalized technical support that makes sure the software works for them, even modifying the source code to make it easier for their usage. Sometimes this makes the software more usable for those who are charged less, sometimes it makes things harder.
When a price break is announced, combined with additional change requests requested by the wealthy (including bankruptcy "reform"), those paying less get a little upset.

1. Pick 15 of your favourite movies.
2. Go to IMDb and find a quote from each movie.
3. Post them here for everyone to guess.
4. Strike it out when someone guesses correctly, and put who guessed it and the movie.
5. NO GOOGLING/using IMDb search or other search functions.

1) I want rustlers, cut throats, murderers, bounty hunters, desperados, mugs, pugs, thugs, nitwits, halfwits, dimwits, vipers, snipers, con men, Indian agents, Mexican bandits, muggers, buggerers, bushwhackers, hornswogglers, horse thieves, bull dykes, train robbers, bank robbers, ass-kickers, shit-kickers and Methodists.[info]moon_fox
2) I even made poor Louis take me on Crusade. How's that for blasphemy. I dressed my maids as Amazons and rode bare-breasted halfway to Damascus. Louis had a seizure and I damn near died of windburn... but the troops were dazzled.
3) Well, nobody's perfect. [info]narfinity
4) It would not be difficult, Mein Fuhrer. Nuclear reactors could... I'm sorry, Mr. President... nuclear reactors could provide power almost indefinitely.
5) My God. I haven't been fucked like that since grade school. [info]narfinity
6) And the Lord spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin. Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three, being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in my sight, shall snuff it. I don't really play the games, but I still think they have the best animation team in the business. Scripts being the same, I'd rather have Square do my animation than Pixar.

About this Entry
Jan. 28th, 2008 @ 03:09 pm Geek Social Fallacies
http://www.plausiblydeniable.com/opinion/gsf.html

I've seen each of these five in geek groups I've known. I think each of these come out of an intense fear of rejection as much as ostricization as the author asserts. The five (for the impatient)

Geek Social Fallacy #1: Ostracizers Are Evil - "GSF1 prevents its carrier from participating in -- or tolerating -- the exclusion of anyone from anything, be it a party, a comic book store, or a web forum, and no matter how obnoxious, offensive, or aromatic the prospective excludee may be."

Geek Social Fallacy #2: Friends Accept Me As I Am - "Carriers of GSF2 believe that since a friend accepts them as they are, anyone who criticizes them is not their friend. Thus, they can't take criticism from friends -- criticism is experienced as a treacherous betrayal of the friendship, no matter how inappropriate the criticized behavior may be."

Geek Social Fallacy #3: Friendship Before All - "If both friends are GSF3 carriers, you're screwed -- the first one will feel betrayed if you reveal the secret, and the other will feel betrayed if you don't."

Geek Social Fallacy #4: Friendship Is Transitive - "Every carrier of GSF4 has, at some point, said: "Wouldn't it be great to get all my groups of friends into one place for one big happy party?!" If you groaned at that last paragraph, you may be a recovering GSF4 carrier."

Geek Social Fallacy #5: Friends Do Everything Together - "GSF5 requires that every friend be invited. This means that to a GSF5 carrier, not being invited to something is intrinsically a snub, and will be responded to as such."
___

I still have trouble with #5 sometimes, and used to hold #2 and #4. I've seen all of them in the geek community (though nowhere near limited to that!)

2. http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

4.Use your graphics program of choice to throw them together, and post the result.

So, trip to the great LA it is. (We looked at the temperatures of the Grand Canyon and Santa Fe and he shivered out a "Hell no.")

Funny thing is, he's stoked about Universal Studios but doesn't care about Disneyland. Desertbell, no barraging him after the fact :)

I don't know what our schedule is going to be, so I can't plan anything with my friends in the area. Cat, what's your schedule like? I don't have your phone number, or even if you'd have time?

*hugs* to all. :)

I would have answered questions about my wisdom a lot higher before meeting Hikmet -- now I feel like a fool most of the time. :) -- The charisma and dexterity is high, the strength is slightly low. (the fact that I can juggle withstanding)

From http://www.easydamus.com/character.html :

I Am A: Chaotic Good Elf Wizard (4th Level)

Ability Scores:

Strength-9

Dexterity-13

Constitution-11

Intelligence-15

Wisdom-12

Charisma-13

Alignment:
Chaotic Good A chaotic good character acts as his conscience directs him with little regard for what others expect of him. He makes his own way, but he's kind and benevolent. He believes in goodness and right but has little use for laws and regulations. He hates it when people try to intimidate others and tell them what to do. He follows his own moral compass, which, although good, may not agree with that of society. Chaotic good is the best alignment you can be because it combines a good heart with a free spirit. However, chaotic good can be a dangerous alignment because it disrupts the order of society and punishes those who do well for themselves.

Race:
Elves are known for their poetry, song, and magical arts, but when danger threatens they show great skill with weapons and strategy. Elves can live to be over 700 years old and, by human standards, are slow to make friends and enemies, and even slower to forget them. Elves are slim and stand 4.5 to 5.5 feet tall. They have no facial or body hair, prefer comfortable clothes, and possess unearthly grace. Many others races find them hauntingly beautiful.

Class:
Wizards are arcane spellcasters who depend on intensive study to create their magic. To wizards, magic is not a talent but a difficult, rewarding art. When they are prepared for battle, wizards can use their spells to devastating effect. When caught by surprise, they are vulnerable. The wizard's strength is her spells, everything else is secondary. She learns new spells as she experiments and grows in experience, and she can also learn them from other wizards. In addition, over time a wizard learns to manipulate her spells so they go farther, work better, or are improved in some other way. A wizard can call a familiar- a small, magical, animal companion that serves her. With a high Intelligence, wizards are capable of casting very high levels of spells.

So I'm waiting for something right now at work and was looking at my notes for a story I'm working on (I don't actually write on the clock, but sometimes I'll think about notes) and this story has grown *dark*.

I can still pull out and reuse this story as something much lighter, but then it becomes much shorter and basically a fluff piece with no real conflict. Not sure where to go now.
